Fallout

December 26 Update: Now Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition is on sale. Link is in the “Sources” section.

December 14 Update: On a related note, Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition is currently on sale for $4.99 at another distributor called GetGames (it’s a good site, I and reddit have had good experiences with it). Funny how the timing worked out. Link is in the “Sources” section.

Original Post: Ah, winter. A time for family, friends, and huge deals on games. Yesterday, GOG started the first of the winter sales. And how did GOG kick it off? By offering Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics FOR FREE for the next 48 hours. At the time of this review, it’s been 31 hours since the sale was posted, so you all still have 17 hours left to get yourselves a copy of these classics until they return to their normal price. If you’re unfamiliar with the series, the Fallout games take place in a post-apocalyptic future several years after a global nuclear war for dwindling resources devastated Earth. The games involve the player venturing out into the nuclear wasteland that Earth has become to find out the horrors that have been created during humanity’s long isolation in the fallout shelters while ensuring the continued survival of humanity. Each game received critical acclaim and is still thought of highly today.

Fallout...FOR FREE!

Fallout…FOR FREE!

If you want more motivation, keep in mind that there’s a high probability that these games will be taken off of GOG’s store since Interplay Entertainment’s rights to sell the three Fallout games mentioned above will expire on December 31, 2013. For those that don’t know, Interplay was threatened with bankruptcy back in 2007, so it sold the Fallout franchise to Bethesda Softworks. That’s why Fallout 3 and New Vegas were published by Bethesda. Meanwhile, Interplay continued to sell the first three Fallout games. There was a dispute over whether Interplay’s sale of the franchise to Bethesda meant that Interplay could still sell the Fallout games it published, so the two got into a lengthy legal battle that was resolved in 2012 when Interplay sold full rights to sell its published Fallout to Bethesda for two million dollars and agreed to have its rights to sell expire at the end of this year.

Whether or not Bethesda will license the games to GOG to sell like Interplay did remains to be seen. Therefore, if you’ve ever had even a slight desire to play the Fallout series, I’d recommend picking up these games while they’re still free and on GOG. Not even Valve Corporation has offered these games for free on Steam.

I’ll be keeping an eye on any noteworthy sales on the major gaming distributors and posting any that the clan might like. Keep checking for updates to this post or new posts once this one gets too cluttered.
